A new study, conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that erectile dysfunction in older men who had a diagnosis of heart disease or coronary artery disease may be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
The results from the study will be presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, which is intended to be the third annual meeting of the American Heart Association. The results were published Oct. 18 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Viagra, the generic name for sildenafil, was originally developed to treat chest pain caused by coronary artery disease.
This study was conducted in the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Care System. Veterans have a higher risk of having a heart attack if they have a history of a heart condition.
The results were published in the June issue of the journal.
Study leader Dr. John O'Brien said, “This is the first study that has directly compared the use of sildenafil and Revatio in a group of older patients with heart disease who have a heart condition and a history of coronary artery disease.”
He said the results are “a landmark finding” and “will provide important information for physicians and patients who are considering their use of this medication.”
The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Researchers said they are also trying to understand the mechanisms of erectile dysfunction in older patients and to examine whether other medications that can help in erectile dysfunction can also cause the condition. How to Use:
